Weeks of February 10th and 18th

2/10/2014

1-R is spectacular at showing how much we care this month!  This week we will do our Valentine's project and fill each other's buckets up with wonderful caring compliment hearts.  Each student will share their special hearts and create an "I am special" poster.
Also, I hope you all have had a chance to check out the web sites on my new "Resources" page.  Keep checking over the next few weeks because I will be adding more great resources as well.
* Also a reminder that there is no school on 2/14 and 2/17. Have a great Valentine's Day and long weekend!

Here is a look at what we will be learning over the next few weeks:

Phonics- We will continue practicing long o words this week, and review the long vowel sounds we have learned up until this point.  Next week we will begin long u words that end with une, oon, ule, ool, and ude.

Writing- This week the students are finishing up their persuasive writing letters and will share them with you soon.  Keep a look out for a letter in their folder as they have been working hard to change opinions through their writing.  We will continue to write one more opinion through a letter over the next few weeks as well.

Reading-  This week we will review Text-to-Text and Text-to- Self Connections.  Next week we will begin our Nonfiction unit.  We will explore the differences in fiction and nonfiction stories, and begin looking at features that help us find information in nonfiction books.

Math- Over the next few weeks in Math we will continue on with Unit 5.  We will compare differences using number stories with pennies, and also solve number stories using addition and subtraction.  We will also continue to practice doubles addition facts and compare numbers using the greater than and less than symbols as well.  Keep practicing the addition fact cards at home too!

Social Studies- We will finish discussing and exploring facts about the country Mexico and create Mexican Fact Cards about the information we learned.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend and be sure to share how you care for someone!
