Here is a look at the skills we will work on over the next few weeks:
Writing- The students will continue to write the steps, label the pictures, edit and publish their "How-to" books. They are really doing an excellent job teaching others how to do things through their writing.
Phonics- This week we are working on consonant blends at the beginning of words such as sc, sl, fl, fr, tr, cr, bl, etc. Be sure to point out any blends you see while you're reading together, and try to write blend words in your sentences.
Next week I will introduce the long vowel "a." We will do various activities to learn the long a sound in words that have patterns of ay, ai, and a_e.
Reading- The students have been learning how to use their schema, or what they know, to better understand the stories they read. Over the next few weeks they will practice using their schema to make predictions, and understand more in fiction and nonfiction texts.
Math- We have been practicing time to the Quarter hour this week, and we will begin writing numbers on a number grid past 100 as well. Next week the students will work on their addition and subtraction fact power, and we will review and wrap up Unit 4.
Science- Over the next few weeks we will continue to learn about weather. This week we discussed the water cycle and why it rains. Next week we will discuss clouds and how to measure temperature.
Just a reminder that the Read and Roll sheets are due on Monday, January 14th!
